A New Year
01st January 2026
I woke to a change in my view - snow coating each branch... .. and I am thinking about the squirrel family housed in an ancient tree just outside this photo. The squirrels haven't been tossing themselves around lately - their practice of fearless abandon.
My phone shot above shows the surprise I received my first morning on Cape Cod - a clear heart right outside my window. I look for it most days, making sure the heart has not broken. Strong Cape winds are common.
On this first day of the year as my head clears, I remember - - Today is the official ending of the "Thoreau Society" as an independent entity - as it is now rolled into a separate organization named the "Thoreau Alliance."
Simply stated, an alliance is not a society.
From Thoreau's journal Jan 12, 1855:
"Perhaps what moves us most in winter is some reminiscence of far-off summer. How we leap by the side of the open brooks! What beauty in the running brooks! What life! What society! The cold is merely superficial; it is summer still at the core, far, far within."
